Into the Woods . . . 7/2/2009 As I head into my last week of training for the Frontier Adventure Race at Searchmont, I admit that I will be a hybrid of an adventure athlete; daring to combine a bit of street with backwoods.
No I didn't head to the woods for intense wilderness training. I wasn't dropped off in the middle of nowhere with the mission to find my way out. I haven't even waded across a river yet.
But what have I been doing? Well I have been running 40 miles or more a week. I have been hitting hills hard and fast. I have been running twice a day when time permits. Cycling when the weather allows.
I have been measuring fast kilometre intervals in 3 minutes or less. Lifting as much as I can. And challenging my mind to drive me way beyond comfort to a level of discomfort I can barely stand.
Yes, I am a different breed of adventure athlete. And as such there is a chance that I may crash and burn.
But then again I may not.
