ABOUT SHERRISherri Laura Smith. Triathlete. Distance Runner. Born 19 February 1976 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Coached by Steve Bentley of Bentley Coaching, bentleycoaching.com. Sherri began her running career at the age of fourteen by participating in cross country and track and field at her local elementary school. Success was not quick to come as Sherri was considered a middle of the pack runner. However, as she found a love and dedication to the two sports, Sherri was motivated to excel. By the time Sherri was ready to graduate not only had she become one of the best distance runners in the province of Ontario, she had also earned a full athletic scholarship to an American University. At Baylor University, www.baylorbears.com, in Waco, Texas, Sherri was able to advance quickly through the ranks with challenging teammates to train beside and state-of-the-art facilities, baylorbears.collegesports.com/sports/c-track/spec-rel/111201aaa.html. Sherri became known around the university and the Big 12 Athletic Conference, Big12sports.collegesports.com, as the "distance queen." Her achievements included three Big 12 Conference titles in the 5,000m, 10,000m, and cross country events. In her senior year of competition, Sherri did not finish lower than second in any event she entered. Nationally, Sherri earned a spot as one of the premier distance competitions and finished in the top ranks at championship meets. Sherri finished her university career with several records at her university as well as nationally. Sherri's success in university carried into her competitions in Canada. In 1998, Sherri won the Canadian National Championship title in the 5000m track event in Montreal. In 2000, Sherri travelled to Portugal to compete on the National team at the World Cross Country Championships where she placed 75th in the world. In 2001, she would better her effort by placing 56th at the World Cross Country Championship in Belgium. In August 2001, Sherri graduated with her Masters' degree in history and chose to return to her native Canada. At the encouragement of friends, in March 2002 Sherri picked up a bicycle and tried out the triathlon for the first time. Three months later in June, Sherri finished third at the Provincial Championships,www.triathlonontario.com ,in only her third triathlon ever. She quickly made it known that she would be a contender in this sport as well. In 2002, Sherri was selected as an Elite member of the Provinical Triathlon and Duathlon teams and has since captured the World Triathlon Championship - Overall Woman Age Group title in Madeira, Portugal. She has also travelled to Calgary to compete in the Canadian Duathlon Championships, where she finished 3rd and subsequently finished 20th at the World Duathlon Championships. Recent competitions include first at the Provincial Triathon Championships in Wasaga Beach in 2003, where she finished 1st in the age group division and women overall, and an overall 4th place in the Subaru Challenge Championships. At the age of 29, Sherri is ready to tackle the highest ranks of the triathlon world. Named as the "one to watch out for" in the triathlon, Sherri is committed to one goal, the top.
